The Impact of Land-Use change for Flood (Case Study in Teunom Sub-District, Aceh Jaya Regency)

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Floods are one of the most widespread natural disasters that adversely affect human activities. Aceh often experiences flood events, one of which is located in the Aceh Jaya Regency. The Aceh Jaya Regency, notably in Teunom SubDistrict has frequently experienced flooding over the years. Land use change allegedly plays an important role in the flood events in the area. This study used a Geographic Information System (GIS), in which spatial data on the land-use change was collected from 2019 to the recent years. The results found in the Teunom SubDistrict the plantation and settlement areas have increased by 21.94% and 1.23%, respectively in recent years. The open land has decreased from year to year, one of the main causes of this increase because of the expansion of plantation areas and population growth. The conversion of forests into agricultural and plantations which is can reduce the capability of the soil to absorb rainwater, thereby reducing soil stability. This causes floods to become more frequent and can damage agricultural land and infrastructure. It also affected the people who lived in the areas. Sustainable land management in the Teunom Sub-District should be carried out to minimize the negative impacts of land cover changes in the area. The implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, forest rehabilitation, and the development of green infrastructure can help restore ecosystem balance and increase environmental resilience to natural disasters.
