Enhancing Tsunami Readiness: The Implementation of the UNESCO/IOC Tsunami Ready Community Program in Deah Glumpang Village, Banda Aceh

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Deah Glumpang village is one of many villages in Banda Aceh situated in a high-risk tsunami zone. The area was severely devastated during the Great Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. Despite rebuilding efforts, the persistent threat of tsunamis continues to pose concerns for the community’s safety and development. To mitigate these risks, the community of Deah Glumpang implemented the UNESCO/IOC Tsunami Ready Community Program to enhance their readiness and resiliency against tsunami disaster. This study evaluated the implementation of the program by assessing the fulfilment of its 12 indicators, which covers aspects of tsunami risk assessment, preparedness, and responses within the community. The evaluation was conducted through a combination of desk studies, interviews with local residents and stakeholders, as well as field inspections. The UNESCO/IOC Manual and Guide No. 74 was used as the benchmark for assessing the community’s compliance with these indicators. The findings show that while all indicators have been met, there is still room for further improvement to strengthen the community’s tsunami readiness.
