Comedy podcasts, as an internet-based audio content format, have emerged as a prominent form on audio platforms in recent years. This article focuses on the middle zone performance behavior in comedy podcasts, exploring how hosts create psychological connections and interactions with users through this behavioral pattern. The concept of middle zone performance originates from Goffman’s dramaturgical theory, referring to an individual’s self-presentation between the public and private domains. As hosts, comedians in podcasts voluntarily expose backstage information, creating a middle zone image between the front stage and the backstage. This performance approach not only enriches the emotional and content expression of podcasts but also enhances listeners’ sense of participation and loyalty through interactions in the comment sections of social media platforms, exchanges in fan groups, and the dissemination of short videos. Moreover, offline recording activities further bridge the gap between hosts and listeners, fostering an emotional connection through shared recording rituals. Middle zone performance helps establish deeper emotional exchanges, strengthen identity recognition and collective emotions, but hosts also need to be cautious of the risks associated with excessive self-exposure.
