Women 's textile creativity in 19th century Serbia: Between tradition and public scene

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The textile creation of women in Serbia in the 19th century represents an important aspect of the national cultural heritage, in which traditional crafts and public presentation of craft skills are intertwined. This study explores the development of women's textile creativity in the context of social and cultural changes that marked the 19th century. Textile products that women made in their households, such as various types of clothing and decorative items, were a key part of everyday life. Through the analysis of the social context and the participation of women at exhibitions, such as the Craft Exhibition in Vranje in 1892, it is investigated how these products be-came part of the public scene. This exhibition and other similar events show how textiles gained recognition as an important segment of national identity and how women became visible as creators in a wider social context.
