What Is Transpersonal Psychotherapy? A Conceptual Template

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Transpersonal psychotherapy lacks a general model that characterizes what qualifies a psychotherapy as transpersonal. It has been developed through a multiplicity of idiosyncratic approaches—a fragmentation that jeopardizes the theoretical development of transpersonal psychotherapy, undermines the possibilities of obtaining wider recognition, and hinders associated training and research. As a remedy, this chapter proposes a model of five components that characterize transpersonal psychotherapy: (a) purposeful use of states of consciousness, (b) transpersonal therapeutic framework, (c) transpersonal techniques, (d) focus on spirituality and/or existential meaning, and (e) suitable phenomenology and therapeutic demands/goals. Given that each component admits varied implementations, the model serves as a conceptual template able to cover the rich variety of transpersonal psychotherapies while providing the much-needed systematization.
