Project Risk Management and Implementation of Integrated Infrastructural Projects in Government Agencies in Kenya

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between project risk management and the implementation of integrated infrastructure projects within government agencies in Kenya. Effective risk management is essential for ensuring the successful delivery of infrastructure initiatives, aligning project goals with national development agendas, and promoting active stakeholder engagement. Grounded in the Resource-Based Theory, the study employed a mixed-methods research design. The target population comprised 504 individuals, including project managers, supervisors, and contractors involved in the execution of integrated infrastructure projects across Kenyan government agencies. A sample of 223 participants was determined using Slovin’s formula for sample size calculation. The findings indicate a positive and statistically significant correlation between project risk management practices and the successful implementation of integrated infrastructure projects. The study concludes that robust risk management contributes to enhanced project efficiency, reduced disruptions, and improved stakeholder satisfaction. Based on these findings, the study recommends that government agencies prioritise ongoing training and leadership development to strengthen risk management capabilities and encourage proactive risk mitigation—particularly within the context of public-private partnerships. Ultimately, enhancing risk management practices is likely to improve infrastructure delivery, stimulate economic growth, and elevate the quality of life for citizens.
