Floriculture in Bengaluru: A Study through the Documentary Flower to Sell

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Floriculture plays a significant role in both the cultural and economic fabric of India, yet it presents numerous challenges, particularly for cultivators and traders. This study examines the floriculture supply chain—spanning greenhouse and open-field cultivation to distribution at Bengaluru’s renowned Krishna Rajendra (KR) Market. It explores the health risks posed by pesticide exposure, the environmental consequences of inadequate floral waste disposal, and the economic limitations experienced by stakeholders. Emphasis is placed on the urgent need for sustainable practices, improved occupational safety measures, and effective waste management systems to secure the long-term viability of the sector. The research focuses on flower cultivation methods, highlighting both traditional and modern techniques, while drawing attention to the adverse health effects of pesticide exposure—such as respiratory ailments, dermatological conditions, and neurological disorders. It also underscores the environmental degradation caused by the accumulation and mismanagement of floral waste at KR Market, resulting in unsanitary conditions and ecological harm.
