The exploration of nematodes associated with two banana cultivars

Abstract: Bananas (Musa spp.) are one of the tropical fruit plants with high economic value and are widely consumed in various countries, including Indonesia. However, the productivity and quality of banana plants are often threatened by various plant health issues, including nematode infestations. Nematode attacks can lead to reduced yields, poor fruit quality, and, in severe cases, plant death. Research on the exploration of plant-parasitic nematodes in banana plants has not been extensively developed, thus there is a need to explore the nematodes associated with Saba (Musa acuminata x balbisiana) and Raja banana (Musa sapientum) cultivars to identify the types of nematodes associated with these cultivars. Root and soil samples were collected from two banana cultivars, namely Saba and Raja, in Paloh Jeureula Village, Pidie Regency. The samples were extracted, and the numbers of parasitic and non-parasitic nematodes were counted and identified. The research findings indicate that parasitic nematodes were found in greater numbers than non-parasitic nematodes. Three genera of plant-parasitic nematodes were identified associated with Saba and Raja banana cultivars: Helicotylenchus, Pratylenchus, and Meloidogyne.
