Global health diplomacy in chronic humanitarian contexts like Palestine: a persistent blind spot and an underused approach
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Global health diplomacy (GHD) is one of the powerful global health approaches for peacebuilding through health that should be used effectively and fairly worldwide, especially in crisis contexts. GHD is ‘the multi-level and multi-actor negotiation processes that shape and manage the global policy environment for health.’ 1 GHD emerged from a growing need to address transnational health issues that began to pose serious threats to global stability and security. Historically, its early focus was managing infectious diseases that impacted trade and public health across borders. It eventually became a global priority, beginning with the first International Sanitary Conference in 1851 to combat cholera. Global health efforts later expanded to address chronic and complex diseases, and following World War II, the establishment of the WHO marked a new era where health became a key player in international diplomacy.
