On the Issue of Using High-temperature Superconductors to Create Advanced Electric Machines
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Relevance Progress in the electric power industry has determined the global trend of introducing electric propulsion technologies into all types of transport. National projects and federal programs of the Russian Federation have set the tasks of achieving technological sovereignty and superiority, which determines the necessity to develop disruptive technologies, one of which for electric propulsion systems is high-temperature superconductivity (HTS). Aim of research To determine the priority vector of the research and development works in the interests of the industrial complex of the Russian Federation on designing advanced electric propulsion systems; as well as in the interests of the electric power industry on designing large electric machines for power plants, wind turbines, and others. Research methods To reveal the research topic, the authors have applied methods of system analysis and synthesis based on the information on the existing units, as well as on the results of mathematical modeling and design of advanced HTS electric machines. Results The article discusses the use of HTS technologies in the design of advanced electric rotating machines. Various layouts of electric HTS machines, as well as cryogenic cooling methods, have been considered. In particular, the features of the use of HTS for AC and DC windings have been analyzed. The overview of the global research and innovations in the field of the use of HTS for power systems of advanced vehicles have been presented. Considering the information about the current projects and the values of the parameters that are achieved in modern electric engines without cryogenic cooling, it has been concluded that the use of HTS machines can be effective in certain niches. In addition, the article has raised the question of the development of the hardware and software base that calculates the technical characteristics of advanced powertrains, including HTS systems.
