Source Normalized Annual Paper Ranking (SNAPR): after 6 years; how the data talk?!

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In the absence of any objective paper ranking method, Source Normalized Annual Paper Ranking (SNAPR) was developed to promote and enrich the research culture in developing countries. Nevertheless, to enhance and modernize SNAPR, several modifications were made based on the data collected over its 6 years of application. In the preceding version, 25% of the overall score was allocated to the Paper SNIP. However, this iteration has elevated this percentage to 30% to enhance the significance of citations and assign them a greater value. In the type of study, the categorization has been streamlined into three distinct types with a total percentage elevated to 25%. In this updated version, Type D, which encompassed “short communication” and “Letter to the Editor,” has been assigned a score of 0. In the previous version, a notable emphasis was placed on allocating 10 scores to papers authored by individuals with local (national) affiliations. In the current version, these 10 affiliations scores have been rescinded. In the old version, one of the prominent limitations of SNAPR was the manual calculation of paper rankings. This process was time-consuming, prone to errors, and difficult to review. Due to these challenges, the authors developed a software program in this version that has resolved all these issues. The system should be tested on a global scale to identify additional areas for improvement.
