Adoption and diffusion of Frontier technologies: Tracing global collaborative research networks on ChatGPT

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The successful integration of new fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies is pivotal for the sustainability of companies and nations. Facilitating knowledge transfer across regions is essential, achievable through collaboration between researchers from emerging and established economies. Research indicates that such collaboration fosters diverse solutions. Leveraging ChatGPT, we examine collaborative research networks between countries, institutions, and researchers in emerging and developed locations focusing on 4IR technologies. By analyzing citation data from Web of Science and employing social network analysis, we identify significant collaboration among researchers from both economic spectra. Notably, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and India play central roles in research collaboration on ChatGPT. Emerging economies like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates show collaborative community networks. Proximity, both geographical and cultural, influences these relationships. Institutions such as The National University of Singapore, Imperial College London, and Stanford University are pivotal in these networks. Themes like artificial intelligence and natural language processing dominate collaborative research, with strong international and regional communities. Institutional proximity is evident, especially among prestigious institutions. Understanding these networks offers insights into enhancing collaborative relationships for further technology adoption among emerging locations.
