Enhanced performance of gasification by blending coal into biomass in a fluidized bed two-stage system

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Biomass, blended with a small amount of coal, was utilized as a feedstock in a fluidized bed two-stage gasifier to produce a low-tar H2-rich gas through O2-rich gasification. The design of the system, which separates the alkalis and coal char stream, addressed the issue of short operation times caused by coal ash agglomeration. With O2-rich air as the gasification reagent and under conditions of an electric furnace temperature of 950 °C, an ER of 0.35, and 10 wt.% coal into biomass, the gas mainly contained 13.31% CO, 20.21% CO2, 4.21% CH4, and 9.77% H2, corresponding to a LHV of 4.85 MJ/Nm3. Concurrently, the tar content in the produced gas gradually decreased and reached 0.012 g/Nm3 after a 6-hour intermittent collection. The steady states of temperature, pressure, and gas composition demonstrated the system's excellent stability for continuous operation and its technical feasibility for the production of H2-rich gas when biomass is blended with about 10 wt.% coal.
