Situational awareness in electricity distribution networks in Nigeria using Micro-Phasor Measurement Units (µPMUs)

Type: article
Abstract: Contemporary challenges in electricity distribution are not unique to any one nation; however, Nigeria’s electricity distribution network is particularly strained by persistent inefficiencies that lead to frequent power outages. These disruptions significantly impact economic activities and quality of life, as the surging demand for electricity far outpaces the current supply. As critical national infrastructure (CNI), Nigeria’s grid is under immense pressure to cater to the needs of its increasing population. This paper examines the potential of Micro-Phasor Measurement Units (µPMUs) to enhance situational awareness in Nigeria’s electricity distribution network, drawing on insights from global case studies and best practices. A comprehensive literature review thoroughly analysed the technical foundations, instrumentation, and application methodologies of µPMUs. µPMUs provide advanced, real-time measurements of key parameters, including voltage, current, frequency, and phase angles, which enable grid operators to detect transient events, manage faults proactively, and optimize overall grid performance. While the integration of µPMUs offers clear advantages, such as reduced downtime, enhanced decision-making capabilities, and improved grid safety, it also presents significant challenges. These include the need for substantial infrastructure investments and the development of robust regulatory frameworks to govern their deployment and operation. In conclusion, this paper highlights the transformative role of µPMUs in redefining Nigeria’s electricity distribution paradigm. By bridging local challenges with global best practices, this study underscores the potential of advanced measurement units to drive a more resilient, efficient, and responsive grid, thereby paving the way for sustainable energy management and economic development both in Nigeria and beyond.
