Abstract: Evaluating the evidence on the application and effectiveness of a reward system in Dutch prisons Since 2014, incarcerated individuals in the Netherlands can earn rewards through compliance. The objectives of this reward system are to maintain order and safety in prisons and promote behavioural change of incarcerated individuals. However, a literature review and interviews with prison governors illustrate several problems regarding the systems’ effectiveness and application. First, the current system does not effectively reach its objectives. Second, and related, system application is also confronted with several problems. It is argued that the current system should be either adapted or abolished. Both scenarios are explored, addressing problems regarding effectiveness and application
