π-Expansion as gateway to viologen-based pimers

Abstract: The present article reports on a new and efficient synthetic strategy towards tetracene-bipyridiniums. On the basis of extensive experimental analyses supported by DFT simulations, we report the first observation of a mixed valence complex formed in solution under standard conditions from an unconstrained bis-viologene derivative.
