Innovating Vietnam’s Values Education through the Lens of Confucian Philosophy

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the integration of Confucian philosophy into modern educational practices, focusing on Vietnam. Rooted in ancient Chinese traditions, Confucianism emphasizes moral cultivation, self-discipline, and the development of virtues such as benevolence (Ren), righteousness (Yi), wisdom (Zhi), and filial piety (Xiao). These principles have historically shaped educational systems across East Asia, fostering harmonious teacher-student relationships, respect for authority, and the holistic development of individuals. Confucian values have deeply influenced Vietnam's educational frameworks, curricula, and pedagogical approaches. This research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing document analysis to explore how Confucian ideals, such as the "way of the gentleman" and the emphasis on moral roots, can be adapted to contemporary educational contexts. The analysis focuses on academic articles, historical texts, educational policies, and curricula to identify practical applications of Confucian values in modern education. Findings reveal that integrating Confucian principles enhances moral and ethical development, promotes academic achievement, and cultivates socially responsible citizens. However, challenges such as uneven implementation, insufficient teacher training, and the need for balanced curricula persist. The study underscores the enduring relevance of Confucian philosophy in addressing modern educational challenges, advocating for its continued integration to nurture well-rounded individuals capable of contributing to societal harmony. By bridging traditional values with contemporary demands, this approach offers a transformative pathway for education in Vietnam and beyond, ensuring that moral integrity remains central to academic excellence.
