Politică și moravuri (din sala de bal, în Dieta Bucovinei)

Abstract: In the following article, the author presents a lesser-known episode from the political life of Bukovina that occurred in the year 1892. The somewhat frivolous aspect of this “clash” of forces was caused by the fact that a conflict erupted stemming from an “anonymous” letter and the refusal of the marshal of the country and the metropolitan of Bukovina to attend the soirée of the governor – Count Pace. In the dispute sparked by the anonymous letter and the refusal of some leaders of the Romanian party to participate in Count Paceʼs soirée, German liberals in Bukovina, along with young Ruthenians who desired the dissolution of the provincial Parliament and, evidently, a different political composition, became involved. The conflict, with ramifications and consequences reaching the central government led by Taaffe, was widely reflected in both the German and Romanian-language press of that era. In the midst of the political struggle, the Romanian National Party – “Concordia” – was formed, demonstrating its strength in a brief but intensely campaigned election, where the tools of political warfare were among the most diverse and well-known of the time. The result of the April 1892 elections was not the desired outcome for those who had submitted their mandates and dissolved the provincial Parliament.
