Abstract: 140 years ago, in Bosanci, near the city of Suceava, in Austrian Bukovina, one of the most important Romanian archaeologists and epigraphists was born: university professor Teofil Sauciuc-Săveanu. The professor, who taught at the Universities of Chernivtsi and Bucharest, was imprisoned without trial from 1950 to 1955. His daughter Carmen, considered a “suspicious element” by the authorities, received the same treatment for several years. We mark this anniversary by publishing for the first time some documents currently preserved in the archives of Suceava and Chernivtsi. These documents clarify some uncertainties circulated in the Chernivtsi intellectual environment regarding the birthplace of the distinguished professor, believed to be Iordănești (a locality currently in the Chernivtsi region, Ukraine).
