Failure analysis for the optimisation of internally pressurised additive manufactured components
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Additive manufacturing is emerging as an alternative method for producing components and prototypes across various industrial sectors. One of the most promising techniques in this field is selective laser sintering. This technique enables the manufacturing of components that, under working conditions, are subjected to internal pressure exerted by a fluid or gas. It opens up the possibility of using different internal geometries that are impossible to machine using conventional techniques. Naturally, these newly internally pressurized components need to be characterized to establish their structural integrity and applicability. One of the most commonly used tests for this purpose is the hydraulic fracture test. In this study, a mathematical expression was developed to estimate the burst pressure in elbowed components using a design of experiments based on response surfaces through hydraulic fracture tests. The results obtained show a much more accurate estimation than the predictive models of burst pressure available in the literature.
