Involvement of Opposition Parties in the Quality of Democracy in the Government System in Indonesia

Type: article
Abstract: The democratic system in a country will certainly lose its meaning if the government runs without any counterbalance or effective control from the opposition. This kind of government is closer to oligarchy or authoritarianism than democracy. Although Indonesia recognizes democracy, this country has not fully succeeded in growing a strong opposition. This article will examine various issues related to the role of the opposition in democratic life, namely the essence of opposition in the context of democracy and the role of the opposition in Indonesian politics and its importance for strengthening democracy. Research shows that the role of the opposition party is very significant in the sustainability of democracy in the Indonesian government system, because it creates a stability that is conducive to democracy. The opposition party functions as a check and balance mechanism for the government so that government policies can be monitored and criticized by parties outside the government. Because the coalition parties in parliament are not fully effective in carrying out their duties and functions, the existence of the opposition party is critical in implementing the principle of checks and balances in the Indonesian presidential system. Policies must bring benefits that prioritize common interests and appeal to not just one group of people. Thus, the opposition party is the main alternative to ensure that government policies remain in line with the interests of the people as a whole.
