Information design process for measuring evapotranspiration with an electronic atmometer

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Precise irrigation and water resource management require accurate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ET R ; mm). The Penman-Monteith energy model, which was developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for ET R computation, is often impractical because it requires extensive meteorological data. The electronic signal processing circuit for recording the ET R via an atmometer (ET gauge) has been designed to enable compatibility with the Internet of Things (IoT) cloud platform of a nearby electronic weather station. This allows for the calibration of the atmometer with ET R estimates from the Penman-Monteith equation by retrieving climatic data from the weather station at 10-minute intervals simultaneously. The atmometer can then be used as a low cost, easy-to-use device on farms as an irrigation scheduling decision support tool. The potential to integrate additional sensors and electronic components with the electronic weather station enhances the versatility of this microcontroller, making it an ideal solution for applications where efficient data transfer and storage are critical.
