NUT carcinoma of the mandible: a rare case report and literature review
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: NUT carcinoma is a rare tumor that primarily arises from midline structures. However, when it occurs in the mandible, it is even more uncommon. This case report highlights a specific instance of NUT carcinoma located in the molar region of the left mandible. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 37-year-old male patient presented with swelling of the gums in the left mandibular molar region. A panoramic radiograph revealed a low-density shadow in the same area. Magnetic resonance imaging indicated that the mass in the left mandible extended into the adjacent soft tissues. Following biopsy confirmation, the patient underwent a segmental resection of the left mandible. No tumor recurrence was observed during the 10-month postoperative follow-up. DISCUSSION: NUT carcinoma is a highly aggressive tumor with a very poor prognosis. Diagnosing NUT carcinoma primarily relies on immunohistochemical techniques and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology. The treatment for NUT carcinoma mainly involves early and complete surgical resection, followed by postoperative adjuvant therapy. It is important to note that drug therapy alone cannot replace the significance of surgery. CONCLUSION: Primary NUT carcinoma of the mandible is extremely rare; this case enhances our understanding of NUT carcinoma and emphasizes the necessity of prompt and accurate diagnosis, early surgical intervention, and follow-up.
