Lack of electrotherapy and physiotherapy programs in the healthcare system for the treatment of dyspareunia in trans women

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This report highlights the lack of electrotherapy and physiotherapy programs for treating dyspareunia in trans women. Despite growing awareness, tailored interventions after gender reassignment surgery remain scarce, leading to chronic pain and complications like neo-vaginal canal necrosis. Socio-cultural barriers, limited clinical trials, and insufficient medical understanding worsen the issue. Integrating electrotherapy and physiotherapy into post-operative care could enhance sexual function, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. Participated in this research, four transsexual volunteers between the ages of 20 and 35 who were recruited at the HC-UFPE participated in this experimental protocol. Pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), sexual function using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and self-esteem using the Rosenberg Scale. The subjects underwent low-frequency, high-intensity transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) for pain relief. The study urges urgent action to address these gaps, ensuring inclusive and effective healthcare for trans women in the Unified Health System (UHS).
