Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper addresses the issue of declining proficiency in Chinese character culture among university students in China, particularly due to digitalization, foreign language emphasis, and test-oriented education. The study aims to highlight the necessity of integrating Chinese character culture into university general education to enhance linguistic literacy, promote traditional cultural heritage, and strengthen cultural confidence. By embedding Chinese character culture in general education, students can develop a deeper understanding of character formation, phonetics, and meanings, fostering both linguistic and cognitive skills. To achieve this, the study employs a multidisciplinary research approach, analyzing the role of Chinese character culture from linguistic, historical, educational, and cultural perspectives. The methodology includes a review of historical and contemporary educational frameworks, surveys on language proficiency, and an assessment of existing general education curricula. Based on this analysis, the paper proposes strategies such as curriculum optimization, innovative teaching methods, interdisciplinary integration, and resource mobilization to effectively promote Chinese character culture in higher education institutions. These strategies aim to reinforce students’ proficiency in the Chinese language while deepening their cultural identity and fostering a broader appreciation of Chinese heritage.
