New perspectives on gender and political mobilization

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Political participation is fundamental to the idea of political equality in a democracy and of access to democratic channels (Hay, 2007;Grasso, 2016).Political inequalities undermine the promise of representation and damage the ideal of universalism (Barber, 1984).In Europe, the political participation literature has documented important inequalities between social groups, not only in terms of gender but also with respect to class and age (Bessant, 2014;Pickard, 2019;Grasso and Smith, 2022;Grasso and Giugni, 2022).In this regard, the literature on intersectionality has made rich strides in recent years and has shown the importance of examining multiple and overlapping forms of political inequalities for understanding political outcomes both in Europe (Davidson-Schmich, 2011;Celis and Erzeel, 2013;Lépinard, 2014;
