Abstract: Hypertensive is considered the most chronic disease widespread in the world with a range of 30-50% and the main cause of morbidity and mortality in adults, especially in developing Countries.Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase1 (IDO1) is a key cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the first rate-limiting step of tryptophan catabolism in the kynurenine pathway, and it plays an important role in many pathophysiological processes including inflammatory and vascular disease. The research included the determination of IDO1 concentration in hypertensive patients and studying the effects of hypertension risk factors on the level of IDO1.The results showed an increment in IDO1 concentration in patients compared to the control group and the level of IDO1 is affected by ageing and smoking (in patients), sodium intake and physical activity (in both groups) and Waist circumference (in the control group). Also, there was a significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and concentration of glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C, VLDL-C, triglyceride glucose index, Sodium, sodium/potassium ratio and the activity of Myeloperoxidase and SOD.At the same time, there was a decrease in Potassium concentration in hypertensive patients compared to the normotensive control group.Pearson correlation coefficient showed a positive correlation between IDO1 concentration and triglycerides LDL-C, sodium, sodium/potassium ratio, and the activity of myeloperoxidase and SOD and a negative correlation between IDO1 and HDL-C.We concluded that IDO concentration can be a bioindicator of hypertension and could be a promising target to treat and control it.
