Abstract: The article opens a series of publications written by the authors as part of the work on the grant of the Russian Science Foundation “Military Theme in the Architectural and Spatial Development of the Far East”. An overview of the ‘barracks discourse’ is given from the academic “History of the Barracks of Troops in Russia” by N. P. Lyapidevsky (1881–1885) to modern publications of both domestic and foreign researchers. Various periodizations of the development of barracks construction are given.
