Increased Concentration of Zinc and Its Effect on Blood Proteins in People Exposed to Environmental Pollution
Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigated the association between exposure to vehicle exhaust pollution, specifically zinc, and alterations in blood protein levels in individuals residing in areas with varying levels of traffic-related air pollution. We compared serum zinc levels and blood protein (total protein, albumin, and globulin) concentrations in two groups: individuals working in heavily trafficked areas and those residing in cleaner environments, while controlling for potential confounding factors. Results revealed significantly elevated serum zinc levels (P≤0.01) and altered concentrations of total protein, albumin, and globulin in the exposed group compared to the control group. These findings suggest a potential link between exposure to vehicle exhaust, particularly zinc, and changes in blood protein profiles, highlighting the need for further research to investigate the health implications for individuals living or working in areas with high levels of traffic pollution.
