Uranium Concentrations in Soil Samples Northern of the Basrah Governorate's Measurement Using Icp-ms Method

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In this study, soil samples were collected from 25 selected sites in the northern regions of Basra Governorate, and the amounts of uranium were measured using the ICP technique after heating, then purifying them from impurities, then grinding them, and finally sieving them with a sieve with an aperture of 75 micrometers.Based on the data, it was found that uranium concentration levels in the Al-Faiha oil field ranged between 0.02 parts per million and 4.74 parts per million. As for the other areas, they all fell within this range of uranium concentration in the samples under study. The results are presented alongside comparisons with other investigations. The uranium content in the analyzed soil samples was less than 100 parts per million (ppm), indicating more about the quality of the surface soil and fill rather than mineable reserves. The concentration of uranium in northern Basra province was collected and evaluated as outlined in this study.According to the analysis, twenty-five surface soil samples contained uranium below the dangerous limit. The concentrations of uranium in the surface soil samples of the study were below the permissible limit of 11.7 parts per million, according to the recommendation of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) in 1993.
