Abstract: The following article discusses the impact of the 2013 popular demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro, beginning with the protests against the increase in public transportation fares. These protests quickly expanded to broader demands, such as the right to public space and citizen participation, attracting a diverse group of demonstrators. Media coverage created a dichotomy between "peaceful" protesters and "vandals," emphasizing acts of civil disobedience. The article addresses the importance of artistic and aesthetic-political actions during the protests, and also the actions of the author, which served as symbolic and practical resistance against systemic oppression, attempting to re-signify public space.
