Studies on Anti-Bacterial Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesised Using Bryophyllum Pinnatum Leaves
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have garnered significant attention for their potent antimicrobial properties, offering a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. This study investigates the green synthesis of AgNPs using Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract, a medicinal plant known for its bioactive phytoconstituents. The synthesis process employed the reducing and stabilizing agents naturally present in the plant extract, ensuring an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized through UV-Vis spectroscopy. The nanoparticles exhibited a predominantly spherical shape with an average size of 10-50 nm.The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against a range of pathogenic microorganisms, including Gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus & Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa & Escherichia coli using the agar well diffusion method. Results revealed significant antimicrobial activity, with larger inhibition zones observed for Gram-negative bacteria compared to Gram-positive bacteria, possibly due to differences in cell wall structure.Additionally, the biosynthesized AgNPs demonstrated a synergistic effect when combined with conventional antibiotics, enhancing their efficacy. This study underscores the potential of Bryophyllum pinnatum-mediated silver nanoparticles as an effective antimicrobial agent, paving the way for their application in nanomedicine and the development of novel therapeutic strategies.Further research is warranted to explore their mechanism of action and potential cytotoxicity in clinical settings.
