Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: This study aims to examine the anesthetic management strategies and perioperative considerations for a pregnant woman with occult spina bifida undergoing a cesarean section with spinal anesthesia. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical data from a 26-year-old first-time mother with occult spina bifida who had a cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. Additionally, we reviewed the literature on how occult spina bifida affects spinal anesthesia and the related management strategies. DISCUSSION: The anesthesia was effective, the surgery was successful, and both the mother and infant experienced positive outcomes without any neurological complications. CONCLUSION: Occult spina bifida does not completely rule out the use of spinal anesthesia; however, careful preoperative assessment of spinal anatomy, refinement of puncture techniques, and thorough postoperative follow-up are crucial.
