Abstract: The present work aims to analyze the behavior of liquid precipitation on the Cabo Verde islands through the extreme value index, applying the moment, maximum likelihood and probability weighted moments estimators. The results are based on historical daily data, from all meteorological stations in the country and over 33 years, from 1991 to 2023. The so-called period às águas in Cabo Verde occurs from July to October. However, we analyzed data from July to December due to observed high peaks of precipitation in the months of November and December. We provide a spatial overview of the estimates over the islands. Summarizing, there is an overall predominance of the estimates of the extreme value index to be positive, identifying the phenomena majorly within heavy tails.
