Commodifying climate solutions: a critical investigation of circular economy

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article critiques the Circular Economy (CE) under the hegemony of climate capitalism, analysing its role in commodifying environmental problems. Using Marxian surplus value and Lacanian surplus enjoyment, we argue that CE fosters economic gains and perpetuates a cycle of surplus enjoyment that reinforces the capitalist status quo. Employing Political Discourse Theory, the study deconstructs CE-related discourses in planning through examples from literature, and reports by international institutions and local governments. Our analysis reveals CE’s alignment with neoliberal agendas, prioritising economic growth over genuine environmental solutions. We advocate for moving beyond empty signifiers to meaningfully address climate crises.
