5G Network Virtualization and Open RAN Technologies: Cybersecurity Threats to National Security in America and the Rest of the World
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The advent of 5G network virtualization and Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technologies represents a significant leap forward in telecommunications, promising enhanced connectivity, speed, and efficiency. However, these innovations also introduce a myriad of cybersecurity threats that pose substantial risks to national security, both in the United States and globally. This article explores the vulnerabilities associated with 5G network virtualization and Open RAN, examining how these weaknesses can be exploited by malicious actors to undermine national security. We also discuss potential mitigation strategies to fortify these systems against cyber threats, emphasizing the need for robust regulatory frameworks and international cooperation.
