Students’ Perceptions on the Correlation Between Grammar Knowledge and English-Speaking Mastery
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores English Education students' perceptions of the correlation between grammar knowledge and English speaking mastery. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research involved 30 students from the 2022 academic year of the English Education Department at Universitas Syiah Kuala. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 students to understand their views on the importance of grammar and speaking skills, and how the two may relate. The findings revealed varying perceptions: while most students believed that grammar knowledge plays a crucial role in supporting fluency and confidence in speaking English, some perceived that fluency can still be achieved even with limited grammar proficiency. These diverse perspectives suggest that while grammar contributes to effective communication, other factors such as vocabulary, confidence, and regular practice also play a significant role.
