Abstract: It investigates the poetic and discursive uses of the interval between frames in comics. From this, arrives at the concept of assembly. However, realizing that it is always necessary to adjust a theory to its object, a theory specific to comics is required. The method used here is a “montage made of montages” crossing elements of comic book theory with montage concepts from visual arts, cinema, and literature. The result is an initial theory of comic montage, which aims to make sense of the tensions between the tabular and the linear typical to this medium.
