Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: The development and differentiation of cells are uniquely impacted by thyroid hormones. Additionally, they alter critical physiological processes in almost all human tissues. individuals with CKD have been found to have altered thyroid hormone status, and thyroid dysfunction is more common in these individuals and has been demonstrated to worsen as CKD progresses. Objectives: To determine the frequency of hypothyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients Study design: Cross sectional study Study Setting & Duration: Department of Medicine, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad. Methods: A total of 151 patients with chronic kidney disease, 25 to 65 years of age of both genders were included. Patients taking dopamine antagonists, antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, lithium, glucocorticoids) and any surgery of thyroid gland were excluded. After informed consent, blood sample was sent to the institutional pathology laboratory for analysis of thyroid function tests and hypothyroidism was noted. Collected data were processed and analyzed using IBM SPSS, version 27.0. Results: Age range in this study was from 25 to 65 years with mean age of 42.09 ± 8.50 years. Majority of the patients 96 (63.58%) were between 25 to 45 years of age. Out of 151 patients, 85 (56.29%) were male and 66 (43.71%) were females with male to female ratio 1.3:1. In our study, frequency of hypothyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients was found in 45 (29.80%) patients. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study highlights a significant prevalence of hypothyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients, particularly among older adults and females. These findings underscore the importance of routine thyroid function screening in this vulnerable population to improve patient management and outcomes
