A new understanding of micromechanism analysis of gear interference fit failure

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: To address the problem of macroscopic gear shaft matching caused by the micro deformation of sprocket hole in high-speed railway during in their service, the microstructure of the gear before and after operation was analyzed in detail by means of electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Due to the dislocation movement in the martensite induced by cyclic stress, the sub-grain boundary layer reversed to large angle grain boundary, forming new grains and resulting in grain refinement on the surface layer. The reduction of volume under compression attributed to the increase of grain boundaries would enlarge the material defects at the top layer and reduce the interplanar crystal spacing, resulting in the shrinkage of gear. Through the above analysis, it can be concluded that the ability to resist external stresses can be improved by refining grain and strengthening the obstacle of grain boundary to dislocation motion.
