Russia’s Strategic Pivot to Africa: Geopolitical Implications in a Multipolar World

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines Russia's strategic pivot to Africa, analyzing the motivations, approaches, and implications of Moscow's renewed engagement with the continent. Utilizing a multifaceted theoretical framework that incorporates neorealism, constructivism, neo-imperialism, soft power, and geoeconomics, the research explores how Russia's African strategy reflects broader shifts in global power dynamics. The study investigates Russia's economic cooperation, military assistance, diplomatic outreach, and infrastructure development initiatives in Africa, using case studies from Sudan, the Central African Republic, and North Africa. It considers the challenges and limitations of Russia's approach, as well as the potential impacts on Western influence, African agency, and the emerging multipolar world order. The research concludes that Russia's engagement in Africa is part of a larger strategy to challenge Western dominance and promote multipolarity, with significant implications for international relations theory and practice.
