Jenitri as Biosorbent in Petroleum Field Produced Water

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As oil fields mature, water production can exceed 90% of the total extracted fluids. Produced water from oil and gas operations cannot be directly discharged or utilized due to the presence of contaminants, which pose significant environmental concerns worldwide. This study explores the use of a filter media derived from Jenitri seeds, chemically activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) at a controlled temperature. The research methodology includes the preparation and characterization of adsorbents, filtration tests using Jenitri-based media, and performance comparisons with existing adsorbents. The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of Jenitri-based adsorbents relative to conventional oilfield filtration materials. The results demonstrate that Jenitri+KOH exhibits superior pollutant removal efficiency due to enhanced porosity and surface area resulting from KOH activation. Bulk density measurements indicate that Jenitri+KOH has the lowest density (0.6 g/mL), while SEM analysis confirms its optimal porous structure. FTIR analysis identifies active functional groups such as -OH, C=O, and C-O. In filtration tests, Jenitri+KOH successfully reduced total dissolved solids (TDS) to 600 mg/L and turbidity to 100-200 NTU, outperforming natural Jenitri, candlenut, and Walnut adsorbents, which exhibited lower efficiency due to their limited porosity.
