Economic Governance and Financial Planning Strategies for NGO Sustainability

Abstract: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) exist to advance public interest causes, yet their impact hinges on sound financial stewardship. With constrained budgets, reliance on external funding, and often limited in-house financial expertise, NGOs face heightened risks of inefficiency, non-compliance, and reputational damage. This paper explores the economic governance functions critical to NGO success, including strategic financial planning, budgeting, cash-flow management, and transparent reporting. Through analysis of case examples, we identify best practices for aligning financial policies with organizational missions, mitigating risks of misuse or fraud, and fostering donor trust. Key recommendations include building financial management capacity, implementing robust internal controls, diversifying income streams, and leveraging digital tools for real-time oversight. By institutionalizing these practices, NGOs can optimize resource allocation, enhance accountability, and secure sustainable support—thereby strengthening their long-term stability and maximizing social impact. Moreover, transparent financial frameworks enhance community credibility and facilitate compliance with donor requirements and regulatory standards.
