Optimization of machining parameters for enhanced chromium plated EN19 steel

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Chrome plating is vital in enhancing metal components' performance, appearance, and durability across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, machinery, and manufacturing. This study investigates the optimization of machining parameters for chromium-plated EN19 steel. Face milling operations were conducted on steel specimens, with systematically varied cutting parameters (speed, feed, depth of cut) and soluble oil used while machining to ensure proper lubrication and cooling. The aim is to address machining issues without compromising the chrome plating surface. Additionally, tool tip temperature was measured during machining to monitor and manage thermal effects that could influence tool wear and workpiece quality. Using Taguchi and ANOVA methods, the effects of cutting parameters on the specimen were analysed to ensure enhanced tool life and reduced cutting forces while maintaining the same wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Finally, surface roughness was determined to assess the finish quality of the machined surface.
