Abstract: Taking into account the history of Polish orthography in the past century, the article discusses and assesses the changes concerning joint and separate spelling that will be in force from 2026. First, spelling variation is examined and contrasted with the situation when graphic variants are not semantically identical. The changes announced by the Council for the Polish Language expand the scope of variants, limit the existing variability or completely change the regulations. The aim of the changes is to simplify Polish spelling, among others by limiting the number of apparent variants with different meaning. The analysis proves that creating a clear set of spelling rules that will not raise any interpretative doubts is in fact a kind of utopia.
