Benefits of Strategic Subcontracting for Industrial SMEs
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the economic implications of strategic subcontracting relationships for industrial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By analyzing SMEs that have established enduring partnerships with key clients, it examines how such alliances help subcontractors overcome size-related constraints, secure access to critical resources and technologies, and drive innovation-led growth. The research identifies essential characteristics of successful buyer–supplier partnerships—long-term commitment, mutual trust, resource-sharing, joint innovation initiatives, aligned objectives, and shared performance metrics—that underpin competitive advantage, cost efficiencies, and revenue expansion. It also examines how strategic subcontracting opens pathways to high-value contracts, mitigates market volatility, and fosters economies of scale. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, meta-analysis of existing empirical studies, original survey-based research, expert observations, and collective project data, the paper delineates the primary economic drivers and measurable outcomes of strategic subcontracting. Its findings offer actionable recommendations for SME managers and policymakers to harness subcontracting as a catalyst for enhanced market diversification, operational resilience, and sustainable economic development.
