Impact of Obesity on the Incidence of Colorectal Cancer in Brazil

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Obesity is widely recognized as a significant risk factor for various chronic diseases, including colorectal cancer (CRC). In Brazil, the rising prevalence of obesity represents an additional public health challenge, especially considering its influence on CRC incidence. Excess adipose tissue has been shown to promote chronic inflammation and hormonal imbalances, contributing factors to carcinogenesis. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between obesity and CRC incidence in Brazil, using recent epidemiological and clinical data. The research was conducted through an analysis of articles addressing this issue in Brazil. Data were extracted from hospital records and national databases, focusing on the relationship between obesity indices and CRC cases. The analyzed studies demonstrated a significant correlation between obesity and CRC incidence. In Alagoas, data indicated that obese patients (OP) had a higher incidence of CRC compared to those with normal weight. Similarly, an increase in CRC mortality rates was observed in populations with a high prevalence of obesity. The analysis revealed significant regional disparities. In Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso, the association between obesity and CRC was also evident, with elevated incidence and mortality rates. The following state-specific correlations between obesity and CRC were identified: AL: CRC incidence in 25% of OP compared to normal-weight patients. RS: CRC mortality rate was 30% higher in OP. MT: CRC mortality was 20% higher in OP. SP: OP had a 15% higher CRC incidence. MG: CRC mortality in OP was 18% higher. BA: CRC incidence was 22% higher in OP. PR: Obesity was associated with a 28% increase in CRC mortality. PE: CRC incidence was 19% higher in OP. Notably, obesity is associated with delayed diagnoses and worse prognoses due to the complexity of treating obese patients. In conclusion, obesity has a substantial impact on CRC incidence and mortality in Brazil. Evidence suggests that obesity not only increases the risk of developing CRC but also complicates disease management and treatment. Publication History Article published online: 25 April 2025 © 2025.
