The role of coal components and modifications on direct carbon fuel cells

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Direct carbon fuel cells are a type of high-temperature fuel cells with great potential. Compared to traditional coal-fired power stations, they offer higher efficiency and lower emissions, enabling the efficient and clean use of coal. The modification of coal with acetic acid, HCl, and NaOH improves the output performance of coal in a molten carbonate direct carbon fuel cell. The electrochemical performance of modified coal is related to its chemical composition, the concentration of oxygen-containing surface functional groups, and ash components. Electrochemical performance tests were conducted using SG, SG-Al2Si2O5(OH)4, SG-CaCO3, and SG-FeS2 as anode fuels for molten carbonate direct carbon fuel cells and hybrid direct carbon fuel cells. Al2Si2O5(OH)4 had no significant effect on the power density of DCFC. Both CaCO3 and FeS2 could enhance the polarization performance of the battery but would affect the current density during battery discharge.
