Abstract: There is a lack of studies on the relations between Catholic Bishops in Brazil that demonstrate the intersubjective practices of acting as a group, the collective efforts to seek consensus, as well as differences, rivalries, tensions and even conflicts. This article aims to analyze the “moral conflict” between the Archbishop-Primate, Dom Romualdo Antônio de Seixas (1787-1860), and the Bishop of Rio de Janeiro and Chief Chaplain of the Imperial Household, Dom Manoel do Monte Rodrigues de Araújo (1796-1863), over the right and privilege of consecrating and crowning the young Dom Pedro II, in July 1841. To analyze the case, we chose to follow the intersubjective paradigm proposed by Jürgen Habermas (1929), which is in action in dialogue, communication, and interaction, especially in situations of “morally relevant conflicts”. The intense divergence between the two Prelates revealed the great distance between the Brazilian bishops and which takes us back to the problem of the possibility of exercising “episcopal collegiality”.
