Conquistando a “cultura do mundo” para Jesus: o diálogo da Igreja A Ponte, Recife-PE

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In my field research conducted at the A Ponte Church in Recife, Pernambuco, I observed how this evangelical community incorporates cultural discourses into its services and events. By attending in-person gatherings and following the church’s social media and digital platforms, I identified the native concept of the “arc of culture,” presented as a way of engaging in dialogue with “local culture.” In some events organized by the church, there are direct connections with the Steiger Mission, a group dedicated to urban evangelism, whose mission is “to reach and disciple youth culture for Jesus.” This work aims to juxtapose my ethnographic data with analyses of the relationship between religion and culture within the evangelical context, drawing on authors such as Rosas (2015), Aguiar (2020a, 2020b), Giumbelli (2018, 2021), Reis and Toniol (2021), and Reis (2023). Drawing on these authors, I argue that culture has become a field of contention for this religious segment, which envisions Brazil as a Christian nation.
